This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a test for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its streaming debut on Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like typical biological terror, but within Together exists a deep contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The narrative starts when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a methodically building of scares, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He fears the notion of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the type of challenges that come with long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they still love each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these anxieties of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on right now.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
